…It was founded in 1876 by university and secondary school teachers who were critical of the Ministry of Education's conservative Catholic education policy. Its leader was Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839-1915). He came up with the idea in 1875 while in the Cádiz prison where he was temporarily detained for university issues. Based on the theories of Julián Sanz del Río (1814-69), who introduced the ideas of the German philosopher Krause, Giner's goal was to provide ordinary citizens with a free and academic education independent of the church, ultimately fostering a driving force for social innovation. …
