In May 1897, during a screening of the then-popular "cinema" as entertainment at a charity bazaar in Paris, a fire broke out from the projector's light source (which at the time used gas, not electricity), and the tented venue was quickly engulfed in flames, resulting in a catastrophic disaster that left 180 people dead (some say 325). According to Paul Rosa's Cinema Until Now (1930), "This disaster was a shock to people all over Europe, and it took several years for this horrible, devilish device to be accepted as a source of mass entertainment."
