This refers to Shinto festivals held mainly in November, December, and January from the beginning of winter to the beginning of spring, from early November to early February. Festivals are events that should originally lead the seasons, so they precede the actual sense of the seasons. In the Shiji Festivals of the Jingikansho Festivals under the ancient Ritsuryo system, the three festivals in midwinter, or lunar November, were Ainame Matsuri, Tamashizume (Chinkonsai), and Niiname Sai, and the three festivals in seasonal winter, or lunar December, were Tsukinami, Hoshizume (Chinkonsai), and Michiae.
