An old town on the right bank of the Oi River in Haibara County, Shizuoka Prefecture. Kanaya, in the center, was a former post town on the Tokaido Highway, and prospered in Kawagoe on the Oi River along with Shimada on the opposite bank. The Tokaido Main Line passes through the town, and the Oigawa Railway branches off here. It is the center of tea production, bordering the large tea plantation area of Makinohara, and is home to the National Tea Research Institute. There are also factories for food processing, lumbering, etc. Incorporated into Shimada City in May 2005. 64.36 km2 . Population: 21,036 (2003). 静岡県榛原(はいばら)郡,大井川右岸の旧町。中心の金谷は東海道の旧宿場町で,対岸の島田とともに大井川の川越で繁栄。東海道本線が通じ,大井川鉄道が分岐。牧ノ原の大茶園地帯をひかえる製茶の中心地で,国立茶業試験場がある。食品加工,製材などの工場もある。2005年5月島田市へ編入。64.36km2。2万1036人(2003)。
