A general term for varnishes used as vehicles (binders) for printing inks. They are mainly made from linseed oil with the appropriate viscosity, but some also use tung oil or soybean oil as raw materials. They are numbered according to their viscosity, with the lowest viscosity being 00 or 0, the middle being 8, 7, 6, and 5, the highest being 4, 3, 2, and 1, and the hardest, used for intaglio printing, being called "gogai" or "extra." Nos. 3 to 5 are often used in letterpress and lithographic printing, but recent set inks for multi-color printing can be used without adjustment and use a synthetic resin type vehicle, so they are not used much anymore.
