One-leafed jasmine - One-leafed jasmine

A deciduous tree of the family Oleaceae (APG classification: Oleaceae). It grows to a height of 15-20 meters. The leaves are opposite, oblong, 4-10 cm long, and have long stalks. Dioecious. In May, it produces a panicle-shaped cyme, which blooms with many white flowers. The corolla is 1.5-2 cm long, deeply divided into four lobes, and has thin lobes. Male flowers have two stamens, and female flowers have one pistil. The fruit is broadly elliptical, 1-1.5 cm long, and ripens black in October. It grows in marshes and is distributed discontinuously in Aichi, Gifu, Nagano, Tsushima, the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and China. The native habitats in Gifu, Aichi, and Nagasaki are protected as national natural monuments. It is planted as a park tree or garden tree for its flowers. In China, the leaves are used as a substitute for tea. The name was chosen because it was thought to be a member of the compound-leafed tago (a dialect word for ash). It was originally located in the outer gardens of Meiji Shrine, and was called Nanjamonja noki because it was a rare tree whose name was unknown. There is another species in the genus Chionanthus in eastern North America.
