The city occupies the northwestern part of Yamagata Prefecture, the southwestern part of the Shonai Plain, and the mountainous area to the south. It was incorporated as a city in 1924. The central city developed as a castle town after Sakai Tadakatsu was transferred to the castle in 1622, and the castle town structure is well preserved with many T-junctions. It is connected to the Uetsu Main Line, Yamagata Expressway, and Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway. It produces silk textiles, agricultural equipment, furniture, badminton rackets, and plywood, and is also famous for its traditional flower candles and habutae silk. Since the 1970s, industrial parks have been developed, attracting machinery manufacturers and other businesses. The plains are a major producer of Shonai rice, and the Oyama area produces sake. It is rich in hot springs such as Yutagawa Onsen, Yunohama Onsen, and Atsumi Onsen, and has tourist attractions such as the Chido Museum, the remains of Nenju Barrier, and Mt. Haguro. In October 2005, Atsumi Town in Nishitagawa County, Kushibiki Town in Higashitagawa County, Haguro Town, Fujishima Town, and Asahi Village were incorporated. 1311.53km2 . 136,623 people (2010).

山形県北西部,庄内平野南西部とその南の山地を占める市。1924年市制。中心市街は1622年酒井忠勝の移封後城下町として発展,丁字路が多く城下町の形態がよく残る。羽越本線,山形自動車道,日本海東北自動車道が通じる。絹織物,農機具,家具,バドミントンラケット,ベニヤ板を生産し,伝統的な花蝋燭,羽二重も有名。1970年代から工業団地の造成が進み,機械工業などが誘致されている。平野部は庄内米多産地で,大山地区は清酒を産する。湯田川温泉,湯野浜温泉,温海温泉など温泉資源に富むほか,致道博物館,念珠関跡,羽黒山などの観光地がある。2005年10月西田川郡温海町,東田川郡櫛引町,羽黒町,藤島町,朝日村を編入。1311.53km2。13万6623人(2010)。
