...The name Kusado Sengen only appears in geographical records such as the Biyō Rokugunshi, written in the mid-Edo period, and the Nishibi Mei-ku and Fukuyama Shiryō, written in the later period, and there are only records of its destruction by a flood in 1673 (Enpo 1). There are many unknowns about the town's character, structure, size, etc. The discovery of the ruins was triggered by the repair work on the Ashida River, which began in 1928. Pioneering research was conducted using excavated remains and related historical documents, and excavation surveys were carried out in 1961. In 1973, the Kusado Sengencho Ruins Research Office (now the Research Institute) was established in Fukuyama City as an affiliated institution of the Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education, and large-scale surveys have been continuing, completing the excavation of 63,000 m2 of the sandbank containing the ruins in 15 years. Approximately 60% of the survey was completed by the 30th survey in 1981. ...

…草戸千軒の名は江戸時代中期に著された《備陽六郡志》や後期の《西備名区》および《福山志料》といった地誌類に見えるだけで，しかも1673年(延宝1)の洪水で壊滅した様子が記されているにすぎず，町の性格，構造，規模等については不明な点が多い。　遺跡が発見される契機となったのは1928年に始まった芦田川の改修工事で，出土遺物や関連する文献史料を通して先駆的な研究がなされ，61年から発掘調査を実施，73年には現地福山市に広島県教育委員会の付属機関として草戸千軒町遺跡調査所(現，調査研究所)を設置して遺跡包蔵中州6万3000m2を15年で完掘するという大規模な調査を継続して行っている。調査は81年度の第30次調査までに約6割が終了している。…
