It was the core company of the Standard Oil Trust, which once dominated the American oil market, and is the predecessor of today's oil companies such as Exxon, Chevron, and Mobil Oil. Its origins lie in an oil refinery started by J.D. Rockefeller in Cleveland, Ohio in 1862, and in 1870 it merged with several other companies to form the Standard Oil Co. (Ohio). Initially, it did not get involved in risky oil exploration and production, but instead focused on controlling crude oil production and integrating refiners through its monopoly on the transportation sector.
