…Religious themes such as the Holy Face, along with landscapes, clowns, and old kings, form the core of his themes, and from his early expressions of despair and sin he gradually reaches a world of grace and salvation. In 1945, he produced stained glass for the church of Assy in Haute-Savoie, eastern France (dedicated in 1950). He is the only truly modern religious painter, and while on the fringes of Fauvism he sought similar expressiveness through bold colors and intense brushstrokes, but in a completely different direction he created a solitary expressionist world. …
