…In 1957, the Greco-Roman style was introduced, and Japan sent teams to compete in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman events at the 17th Rome Games (1960), but suffered a crushing defeat. However, at the 18th Tokyo Games (1964), Yoshikatsu Yoshida (flyweight), Yojiro Uetake (bantamweight), and Nagatake Watanabe (featherweight) won the freestyle events, and Tsutomu Hanahara (flyweight) and Masamitsu Ichiguchi (bantamweight) became the first Japanese to win the Greco-Roman style, winning a total of five gold medals and ranking first in the world overall. Furthermore, at the 19th Mexico Games (1968), Shigeo Nakata (flyweight), Yojiro Uetake (bantamweight), and Masaaki Kaneko (featherweight) won the freestyle events, and Souji Munemura (lightweight) won the Greco-Roman style, establishing Japan as a world power along with the Soviet Union, Turkey, and others. …
