Japanese: 気象事業 - きしょうじぎょう

A business that observes the weather, issues forecasts and warnings, provides observation data, and conveys necessary meteorological information and advice for the purpose of contributing to the promotion of public welfare, such as preventing natural disasters, protecting the environment, ensuring traffic safety, promoting various industries, and combating climate change. In Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency is primarily responsible for this business, which targets the general public, but the Japan Weather Association, private weather companies, and some local governments are also involved in this business for specific users. Note that the Japan Meteorological Agency's business includes earthquake and volcano services and marine and offshore meteorological services, so meteorological services are sometimes taken to be broad and include these services.

自然災害の防止，環境の保全，交通安全の確保，各種産業の興隆，気候変動対策など公共の福祉増進に寄与することを目的として，気象の観測を行い，予報，警報を発表し，観測資料を提供するとともに必要な気象情報や助言を伝達する事業。日本では，社会一般を対象として気象庁がおもにこの事業を担当しているが，特定利用者を対象として日本気象協会，民間天気会社，地方自治体の一部もこれにたずさわっている。なお，気象庁の業務が，地震･火山業務や海洋･海上気象業務を包含するため，気象事業を幅広くうけとってこれらの業務を含める場合もある。
