Mundt, T.

...These works are equivalent to the later works of Lohengrin (1848), Tristan and Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Der Ring des Nibelungen, and Parsifal. The term "music drama" was proposed by Theodor Mundt (1808-61) in 1833, but Wagner himself did not use this term for his works. In a paper in 1872, he objected to his works being called music dramas, emphasizing that they were rather anonymous artistic works. Verdi, an opera composer who stands alongside Wagner, also achieved a high degree of unity between drama and music in a different style, but the term "music drama" is generally used for works by Wagner, Pfitzner, and especially R. Strauss, such as Salome and Der Rosenkavalier.

From the Young Germans

… The name of the Young Germans seems to come from the dedication of Wienbarch at the beginning of “The Conquest of Aesthetics” (1834): “To Young Germany, not to Old Germany.” Writers belonging to this group are divided into the Right Bank of the Rhine group (Wienbarch, Gutzkow, etc.) and the Berlin group (Laube, Theodor Mundt (1808-61), Gustav Kühne (1806-88), etc.) according to their influence from Saint-Simonism and Hegelian philosophy. The “literary revolution” that they all aimed for was nothing less than a movement of intellectual elites who tried to bring about change in the situation through literature, without a political revolution as a premise. For example, G. Büchner, based on the revolutionary practice in Hesse, made a harsh criticism as early as 1836, saying, “It is impossible for the intellectual class to change society through ideas” (letter to Gutzkow). …
