truck system

...wages paid not in currency but in goods or substitutes such as the products of a company, food, or housing. Also called the truck system, it was widespread in the early stages of capitalist development. In Britain, sometimes the employer paid the whole of the wage in kind or part of the wage in vouchers that could be used only in shops run by the employer or his associates, called tommy shops.
