A family of fossil primates from the Eocene epoch of the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic Era (approximately 54 million to 37 million years ago). Unlike Plesiadapis, which is at the intersection between insectivores and primates, it has an orbital ring. It is thought to be of the same family as modern lemurs, but the incisors and canines of the lower jaw do not incline forward and are not comb-like like lemurs. Its body size ranges from that of a mouse to that of a cat. It resembles lemurs in that it has relatively small eye sockets and the tympanic ring is located inside the ear capsule. The thumbs of the front and back limbs are separated from the other fingers and open. Many have been excavated from Europe and North America. Although there are exceptions, they can be broadly divided into two subfamily: Adapinae, which are found in the former, and Notarchitectinae, which are found in the latter. Adapinae means "those who should become Apis (the sacred cow of Egypt)". [Shise Kahara] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
