...In St. Petersburg and Moscow, precision machinery, electrical equipment, shipbuilding, chemicals, and various consumer goods were produced, and in Ukraine's Dnieper complex, heavy chemical and flour milling industries were developed with hydroelectric power as the main source of electricity. Other complexes formed included the Ural complex, which was centered on coalfields such as Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg), the Kuznetsk complex, which was centered on iron ore producing areas such as Novosibirsk, the Angara-Baikal complex, which was centered on Irkutsk, the Far Eastern complex, which was centered on Khabarovsk, the Central Asian complex, which was centered on Tashkent, and the Karaganda complex. Since the 1970s, the development of industrial regions in Siberia east of the Urals has been remarkable. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, each republic became independent, and the industrial regions of Ukraine and the Central Asian countries mentioned above have lost their federal-level cooperation. ...
