Chilean politician. Born in Linares. A military man by trade, he entered politics after participating in the coups of 1924 and 1925. He was Minister of Defense in 1925, Minister of the Interior in 1927, and Vice President in the same year before being elected President. An admirer of Mussolini, he wielded dictatorial power as a conservative president, but he modernized the government, military, and police, and in 1929 resolved the border dispute with Peru. In 1931, he was forced into exile by a general strike during the aftermath of the Great Depression. He returned to the country in 1937 and continued his political activities by associating with a Nazi-like organization.

チリの政治家。リナレス市生れ。生粋の軍人であったが，1924,25年のクーデタに参加して政界に入った。25年国防相，27年内相，同年副大統領を経て大統領に当選した。ムッソリーニを崇拝し，保守派の大統領として独裁的権力をふるったが，行政･軍･警察組織を近代化し，29年ペルーとの国境紛争を解決した。31年大恐慌の余波による混乱期にゼネストで追われ亡命。37年に帰国し，ナチ的組織と結んで政治活動をつづけた。
