From [Bridge]

After World War II, Japan's bridges made remarkable progress, adopting new technologies to rival or even surpass those of the world's developed nations. The Nishikai Bridge (steel arch) completed in 1955, the Amakusa Five Bridges built in 1966, and the Kanmon Bridge (suspension bridge) built in 1973 were groundbreaking achievements in Japanese bridge technology at each stage. At the time of completion, the Urado Bridge (1972, span 230m) boasted the longest span in the world for a prestressed concrete girder bridge, the Hikoshima Bridge (1975, 236m), and the Hamana Bridge (1976, 240m), as well as the Minato Bridge in Osaka (1974), the third longest truss bridge in the world, which reached the highest standards in the world, and the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, which was an unprecedented major project in the history of bridge construction.
[Bridge configuration]
The structure of a bridge can be broadly divided into the superstructure, collectively known as the bridge girder, and the substructure that supports it and transmits force to the ground (Figure 1-a).
