Cahiers (English) French

Cahiers (English) French

It is translated as "petitions." More precisely, it is called Cahiers de doléances. It is a document that was compiled by each class (monks, nobles, and the Third Estate = commoners) in each electoral district to select representatives to the Estates General, the representative body of public opinion under the old system before the French Revolution, and was ultimately entrusted to the representatives of each state. Therefore, the representatives are required to act to realize the contents of the Cahiers at the Estates General, but there are various theories about the extent of their enforcement power. The cahiers that are particularly noteworthy are, of course, those from the election of the Estates General in 1789, and are essential data for exploring the political consciousness and demands of the French people at the outbreak of the revolution.
