Periodic horizontal movement of seawater caused by tides. Tidal currents near the coast or in straits flow in a roughly constant direction and in the opposite direction, periodically changing direction. This is called diversion, and when there is almost no seawater flowing at the diversion, it is called a rest. In many places, the current flows twice in one direction and twice in the opposite direction per day, resulting in four rests, with an average of 6 hours and 12 minutes between diversions. In special places, there are only two rests. Offshore, the current changes direction and speed over time, rotating counterclockwise or clockwise and showing no rests. In many places, the current rotates twice a day, taking an average of 12 hours and 25 minutes to complete one rotation. In some places, it only rotates once a day. The nature of the tidal current is significantly affected by the topography of the seabed and coastline. The period of change in the tidal current is the same as the period of the tides, but the relationship between the two is complex. Near the coast, the current may change direction almost at the same time as high and low tides, or it may change direction after a certain time lag.

潮汐(ちょうせき)に伴って起こる海水の周期的な水平運動。海岸付近または海峡の潮流はほぼ一定の方向，およびそれと逆の方向に流れ，周期的に流向を転ずる。これを転流といい，転流に際して海水がほとんど流れないときのことを憩流という。多くの場所では１日に一方向に２回，反対方向に２回流れ，憩流が４回あり，転流から転流までは平均して６時間12分。特殊な場所では憩流が２回しかない。沖合では潮流は時とともに流向，流速を変じ，左回りまたは右回りに回転して憩流を示さない。多くの場所では流向は１日に２回転し，１回転に要する時間は平均して12時間25分。ところによっては１日に１回転しかない。潮流の性質は海底および海岸線の地形によって著しく影響を受ける。潮流の変化の周期は潮汐の周期と同一であるが両者の関係は複雑である。海岸近くでは満干潮時にほぼ一致して転流する場合と一定の時間ずれののち転流する場合とがある。
