…Up until then, Roman law and canon law had been taught at British universities, but he was the first to attempt to lecture on English law (1753), and in 1758 he became the first professor of English law at a British university (at Oxford University). The lecture plan he came up with at this time became the basis for his later work, “An Interpretation of the English Laws.” With this great academic success as a backdrop, he was elected as the King’s Counsel in 1761, the Queen’s Law Officer in 1763, and a Member of the House of Commons. …
