A radio program in which U.S. President F. Roosevelt spoke directly to the nation. It began in 1933, when Roosevelt was elected president and took office after promising the nation a New Deal to overcome the depression. He first took advantage of the widespread availability of radio to captivate audiences and arouse public opinion with his warm voice and powerful tone. Since then, the president's "fireside chats" have become famous. It was during this fireside chat in December 1940 that he spoke of America becoming the so-called "arsenal of democracy" to counter the Axis powers of Japan, Germany, and Italy. From a political science perspective, this can be seen as an example of using the mass medium of radio to manipulate public opinion.
