A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Pipridae. This family consists of about 18 genera and 52 species. They live in subtropical to tropical forests south of Mexico in the New World, but most species are distributed in South America. This family is well known for its beautiful plumage and the unique display (dance) that males perform during the breeding season. The name manakin comes from this dance. Total length is 10 to 18 cm. All species are small birds, smaller than the great tit, with the exception of a few species such as the long-tailed manakin Chiroxiphia linearis (total length including tail 25 cm) (illustration), in which the male has particularly long two central tail feathers.
