A city in the southwest of Turkey's Asia Minor Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean Sea. Capital of Antalya Province. Population 603,190 (2000). A distribution center for wheat and citrus fruits, it has a flour milling industry and is a lively fishing base. In summer, it is crowded with vacationers and beachgoers. There is also an airport. A port city founded in the 2nd century BC by Attalus II of the Kingdom of Pergamum, its former name was Attaleia. There are many ruins from ancient Greece, Rome, and the Seljuk Turkish period, including Hadrian's Gate. There is also an archaeological museum. Nearby are ancient ruins such as Aspendos and Side.
