...The number of traditional Kanze plays up until the end of the Edo period was 200, consisting of 110 in the inner group, 62 in the outer group, and 28 ben-noh. During the Meiji Restoration, the 22nd head of the Kanze school, Sanjuro Kiyotaka (1837-88), retreated to Shizuoka following the former shogun, and the Kanze school in Tokyo was protected by the first head of the school, Umewaka Minoru, and the 5th head of the branch family, Kanze Tetsunojo (Benisetsu), and avoided decline and moved towards recovery, but this was the indirect cause of the so-called Umewaka problem (a dispute over the issuance of licenses).
