Encephalartos villosus

Japanese: オニソテツ(英語表記)Encephalartos villosus
Encephalartos villosus
A tree of the Cycadaceae family native to South Africa. The trunk is short and thick, about 2m tall, and the upper part is covered with gray down. The deeply pinnate leaves are clustered at the top of the trunk, over 1m long, and each leaf lobe is linear. Both male and female flowers are oblong and orange-colored. The cones ripen to a crimson color. About 20 species of Encephalartos are known in tropical and South African regions, and the starch contained in the center of the trunk is used as food by indigenous people.
