〘Noun〙 A type of dancing nembutsu. It was started in Edo city during the Keicho era ( 1596-1615 ) by the Hitachi monk Housai to raise funds for temple repairs. Later, around the Kanei era ( 1624-1644 ), it came to mean that beggars would place artificial flowers on their hats, beat with drums and gongs, and dance through the city chanting nembutsu. ※Hyōbanki Sozo Monogatari (1641) - The name of a ko-maiko-tayuu underachiever: "It's funny how a young monkey comes out and does all sorts of imitations, but it's funny how they do nembutsu and monkey shows."
