Born: October 12, 1860
An American engineer who came to Japan during the Taisho period. Born in New York State. He taught himself electrical machinery technology, and founded the Mining Electric Company in 1888 and the Sperry Electric Railroad Company in 1890. While running his companies, he also devoted himself to improving technology and obtained as many as 400 patents. He is particularly famous for the gyrocompass and its application to compasses and arc searchlights. He came to Japan in 1921 and made proposals for improving Japan's mechanical industry technology, making a major contribution to the improvement of mechanical technology, especially in the navy. He died in New York City in 1930, and the following year, in 1931, the Dr. Sperry Memorial Compilation Committee published "The Dr. Sperry We Know."

大正期に来日したアメリカ人技師。ニューヨーク州生まれ。独学で電気機械の技術を身につけ,1888年に鉱山用電機会社を,1890年にスペリー電気鉄道会社を設立するなど会社経営を行うかたわら,自ら技術改良に力を尽くし400件もの特許を取得した。ジャイロ・コンパスとそれを応用した方位計やアーク灯の探照灯などは特に有名である。大正10(1921)年に来日して日本の機械工業技術の改善策について提言し,特に海軍における機械技術改良に対して多大の貢献をした。1930年にニューヨーク市で没したが,翌昭和6(1931)年スペリー博士追悼録編纂委員会によって『我等の知れるスペリー博士』が刊行された。
