Uzen Province - Uzen no Kuni

Japanese:
Uzen Province - Uzen no Kuni

The name of a province newly established in 1868 (Meiji 1). It occupies most of Yamagata Prefecture. By a proclamation of the Dajokan on December 7 of the same year, the former Dewa Province was separated into two provinces, Uzen and Ugo. This was a measure by the new Meiji government to thoroughly promote the education and upbringing of the feudal domains of Mutsu and Dewa Provinces, which had formed the Oshu-Uu League of Feudal Domains and taken anti-government action during the Boshin War, by increasing the number of provinces from two to seven. Uzen Province was made up of four districts of Dewa Province, Okitama, Murayama, Mogami, and Tagawa, and the border with Ugo Province was the Mogami River in the Shonai region, Hinotodake and Kamurosan in the inland area, and the area south of these became Uzen Province. In reality, it was merely a division of regions, but it is also seen as having played a role in paving the way for the implementation of the modern prefecture system that followed after the administrative reforms that led to the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures. The unified Yamagata Prefecture that was established in 1876 was an area that added Akumi District (Ugo Province) to the area of Uzen Province. The word Uzen is often used, particularly in the names of railway stations, such as Uzen Nagasaki (Nakayama Town, Higashimurayama District), Uzen Chitose (Yamagata City), and Uzen Tsubaki (Iide Town, Nishiokitama District).
