This refers to the whirlwind that occurs with a large-scale fire. The outbreak and spread of a fire is greatly influenced by weather conditions such as wind speed and humidity, but once a fire has started, an updraft is created above it, resulting in new strong localized winds. In the case of a large fire, a strong swirling wind (whirlwind) often occurs. It is widely known that a large fire broke out during the Great Kanto Earthquake (September 1, 1923), and a fire tornado occurred in the vacant lot of the former Honjo Clothing Factory, killing many people, including those who had been evacuating.
