Also called kudzu yose nets, they were mainly used for fishing sea bream. They are thought to have developed around the end of the Muromachi period, mainly in Settsu, Kii, and the Seto Inland Sea. During the Edo period, they spread to Chikuzen, Nagato, Hizen, Higo, Satsuma, Owari, Edo Bay, and other areas, and their scale grew considerably. In addition to fishing nets, they also used a threatening rope called a furi-nawa (a long main rope with many yellowtail planks hanging from it), which was dragged around the seabed to drive sea bream from deep areas to shallow waters, and then a beach seine net was set up behind it (jikogi net), or the sea bream that floated up to the shallows were caught with a swivel net, or a bottom net was set up and the schools of fish were driven onto it. The fishing nets themselves varied depending on the region. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
