A village in Futaba County, eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Population 1,831 (1995). Located in the mountains of the Abukuma Highlands, it occupies the upper reaches of the Takase River. It is surrounded by mountains with elevations of 600-1,000m, and about half of the village area is forest and wilderness. Ochiai, the village's center, is at the confluence of the Takase River and its tributaries, the Katsurao River and the Nogawa River. Before World War II, the village was centered on horse breeding and sericulture, but after the war many settlers came to pioneer the area, and pioneer settlements such as Kashiwara, Nogyo, and Koideya were formed in the northeastern part of the village. Horse breeding and sericulture did not do well after the war, and in recent years rice and tobacco cultivation has also decreased due to production adjustments, and the village now focuses on raising beef and dairy cattle.
