… Cold agglutinins usually agglutinate blood cells at temperatures below 10-15°C, but in some patients, even higher temperatures, and in rare cases above 30°C, can be effective. Therefore, when the skin or fingertips of a patient with a high titer of this antibody are exposed to low temperatures, blood cells in the local blood vessels agglutinate, causing circulatory disorders (cold agglutinin disease). Most of these antibodies belong to the IgM immunoglobulin and are reactive with complement, but while antibodies are easily dissociated at high temperatures, complement only works strongly at temperatures close to body temperature, so hemolysis in the body does not occur very strongly. …
