The abbreviation for the English dictionary known as "Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language", which began as "An American Dictionary of the English Language" published in two volumes in 1828 by N. Webster and has undergone several revisions since then. It is also known as "Merriam-Webster's Dictionary" after the name of the current publisher. Originally, it contained slang, terminology, and academic terms, and was characterized by accurate definitions and etymological interpretations, but it was particularly detailed in American English words and usage, and contributed greatly to the subsequent development of American English. This tradition was carried over to the revised edition, and it is still widely used today as one of the most authoritative English dictionaries.

N.ウェブスターが 1828年2巻本として出版した『アメリカ英語辞典』 An American Dictionary of the English Languageに始り，40年以後改訂を重ね，現在は"Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language"として知られる英語辞典の略称。現在の出版元の名を取って，「メリアム＝ウェブスター辞典」とも呼ばれる。当初，俗語，術語，学術用語などを収め，正確な定義，語源の解釈などに特色があったが，とりわけアメリカ英語の単語と用法に詳しく，以後のアメリカ英語の発展に大いに寄与した。この伝統は改訂版にも受継がれ，今日なお最も権威ある英語辞典の一つとして広く利用されている。
