A city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. It is located in the Wupper River valley in the southern part of the Ruhr area, about 30 km east of Düsseldorf. Silk weaving and dyeing industries developed in the late 18th century, and today the city is home to industries such as machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, rubber, and pharmaceuticals. A monorail opened in 1900 and operates on the city. Population: 351,050 (2010). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
