West, Mae - West

Japanese: ウェスト,Mae - うぇすと
West, Mae - West

...means a mysterious, sophisticated, and unrealistic (i.e. not explicit) sexuality, and is typified by actresses from the popular high society sex comedies (called screwball comedies) of the time, especially Jean Harlow in "Platinum Blonde" (1931), Miriam Hopkins in "Design for a Life" (1933), and Carole Lombard in "The Twentieth Century Express" (1934). However, as the term itself became popular, it faded away, and soon most of the "sexy" actresses of the 1930s were simply called "glamour girls" (including Mae West, who was also called "baby bump"). In 1938, the term also came to be used in the fashion world as a synonym for "best dressed," and the nickname "glamour girl" was given to a beautiful dark-haired woman named Brenda Fraser, which caused a stir. After the war, the original meaning of the word glamour was completely lost, and in Hollywood, the adjective "glamorous" was sometimes used to describe Grace Kelly as an "intelligent blonde beauty," while the term "glamorous" was sometimes used to describe Marilyn Monroe as a "voluptuous blonde beauty."
