[補説]かつては兵庫県明石市などを通過する東経135度の子午線上での平均太陽時として、天体観測に基づいて計測されていた。現在は、情報通信研究機構が複数のセシウム原子時計・水素メーザー原子時計によって得られる時刻を平均・合成して協定世界時を生成し、これを9時間進めたものを日本標準時として決定している。
