Japanese: キャプテン･システム（英語表記）CAPTAIN System

This is the Japanese name for the home information system collectively known as videotex, which was developed and introduced in the world's advanced industrial countries in the 1970s and 1980s. The official Japanese name was Character and Graphic Information Network System, and this acronym is an acronym for its English translation, Character and Pattern Telephone Access Information System. The basic mechanism of videotex is that a television set is used as a home terminal, which is connected to a central computer via additional devices and telephone lines to provide information services, transaction services such as teleshopping and telebanking, and e-mail services. The Japanese Captain system was characterized by its ability to display graphics, unlike Western systems which could only display text information.

1970年代から80年代にかけて世界の先進産業国が競って開発･導入を図ったビデオテックスvideotexと総称される家庭向け情報システムの，日本での開発名称。正式日本名は文字図形情報ネットワーク･システムで，その英訳語Character And Pattern Telephone Access Information Systemの頭文字を綴った呼称。ビデオテックスの基本的な仕組みは，テレビ受像機を家庭内端末とし，これを付加装置と電話回線を介してセンター･コンピューターに接続し，情報提供サービスやテレショッピング，テレバンキングといったトランザクション･サービス，電子メール･サービスを提供するというもので，日本のキャプテン･システムは，文字情報のみを表示できる欧米のそれと異なり図形も表示できることが特色とされた。
