A fictional place that serves as the backdrop for most of the works of American author W. Faulkner. It is said to be the name of a county in the northeastern part of Mississippi. The county seat is called Jefferson, but the town and county are modeled on Oxford and Lafayette counties, where Faulkner spent most of his life. He first used the name of the county in 1929 when he wrote the first draft of Sanctuary, and it became a symbolic setting for his important works, including The Sound and the Fury (1929), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
