This refers to the use of bore pipes and tunnels specially designed for degassing to guide dense methane from coal seams and coal mining sites. Coal seams contain large amounts of methane, which seeps into the mine space during mining and from the mining sites. Since methane is dangerous and explosive when present in the air at 5-15% levels, it is necessary to drill into the coal seam before mining and remove as much of it as possible. This method generally allows 30-60% of the methane in the coal seam to be removed. There are several techniques, including natural ground boring, upper and lower plate boring, gas removal tunnel method, and wastewater sealing method. In addition to drilling inside the mine, it can also be done by drilling from outside the mine underground.

炭層や石炭の採掘跡などから濃厚なメタンをボーリングパイプ，ガス抜き専用坑道などを利用して誘導すること。炭層には多量のメタンが含まれていて，採炭時および採掘跡からこれらのメタンが坑内空間に湧出してくる。メタンは空気中に5～15%含まれていると爆発性があって危険なので，採掘前に炭層にボーリングを行い，できるだけ抜き出しておく必要がある。この方法で一般に炭層中のメタンの 30～60%を抜き出すことができる。技術的には地山ボーリング法，上下盤ボーリング法，ガス抜き坑道法，払跡密閉法などがある。坑内でボーリングするほか，坑外から地下へボーリングして行うこともある。
