Japanese painter. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1933 (Showa 8). Studied under Matsuoka Eikyū. He showed talent while still a student, and his work "Iso" (Rock) exhibited at the Teiten Exhibition in 1957 was selected for the special prize. In 1954, he formed the Ruso Art Association with Yamamoto Kyujin, a disciple of Eikyū, and others, and continued his research. However, around the time the association was dissolved in 1963, he began to suffer from tuberculosis, and had to refrain from activities until after the Second World War. In 1951 (Showa 26), he was commissioned by the Nitten Exhibition to start painting again, and in 1982 he won the Japan Art Academy Prize for "Peacock" at the Nitten Exhibition the previous year. The following year, he became a council member of the Nitten Exhibition, which was then reorganized as an incorporated association. From 1987 to 1990, he toured Egypt and Europe, and exhibited the results of his work, "Kyu" (Sky) at the Shin Nitten Exhibition in 1984. He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1970 and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1974. His work is characterized by intellectual composition and fresh colors.
