Limonite - limonite

A general term for impure mixtures mainly composed of ferric hydroxide. Chemical formula: _Fe2O3・_{nH2O .} Used as iron ore. The main mineral is goethite with low crystallinity and its hydrous amorphous phase. It is thought to have originated from hydrothermal or fumarolic deposition, oxidation of primary iron sulfide minerals, or chemical sedimentation. It is commonly found in sediments around smokers (chimney-shaped structures formed by deposits from hydrothermal fluids) in the deep sea. In Japan, it was mined for a long time at the Abuta Mine in Hokkaido (closed), the Suwa Iron Mine in Nagano Prefecture (closed), and the Gunma Iron Mine in Gunma Prefecture (closed). The English name comes from the Greek word λειμωυ (lowland with grass along a river).

水酸化第二鉄を主成分とする不純な混合物の総称。化学式Fe₂O₃・nH₂O。鉄鉱石となる。主成分鉱物は低結晶度の針鉄鉱やその含水非晶質相。成因的には、熱水性あるいは噴気性堆積(たいせき)起源のもの、初生硫化鉄鉱物の酸化によるもの、化学的堆積物起源と考えられるものなどがある。深海中のスモーカー（熱水からの沈殿物が堆積した煙突状の構造物）周辺の堆積物の中には普遍的に産する。日本では北海道虻田(あぶた)鉱山（閉山）、長野県諏訪(すわ)鉄山（閉山）、群馬県群馬鉄山（閉山）のものは長く採掘された。英名はギリシア語のλειμωυ（川沿いの草の生えた低地）に由来する。
