Japanese: 祖師像 - そしぞう

A portrait in the form of a painting or sculpture of the founder or patriarch of a Buddhist sect or school, or of a high priest of that lineage. Temples of each sect build a Soshido or Kaisando hall to enshrine the statue of the patriarch, and hold Soshikai and Kaisanki ceremonies. In Esoteric Buddhism and Zen Buddhism, the worship of the patriarch is important, and statues of patriarchs were actively produced. However, in Zen Buddhism, the only patriarch is Bodhidharma. Well-known relics include the "Seven Patriarchs of Shingon" (paintings) and the "Six Patriarchs of Hosso" (sculptures).

仏教の一宗一派の開祖や開山，あるいはその法系の高僧を絵画，彫刻で表わした肖像。各宗の寺院では祖師像を祀る祖師堂や開山堂が建立され，祖師会，開山忌を行う。密教，禅宗では祖師崇拝が重視され，祖師像の制作も盛んに行われた。ただし禅宗の祖師といえば達磨大師だけをさす。遺品としては『真言七祖像』 (絵画) ，『法相六祖像』 (彫刻) などが著名。
