Yin scale - Yin onkai

Japanese: 陰音階 - いんおんかい

A type of Japanese scale. The most basic form is Mi, Fa, La, Si, Do, Mi, and is characterized by the inclusion of two minor second intervals. However, even in songs based on the Intonation scale, the ascending melody is often based on the form Mi, Fa, La, Si, Re, Mi. It is also called the Miyakobushi scale, and the modes based on this scale are also called Intonation modes. The scales of early modern Japanese music are based on this. This was proposed as a counter-concept to the "Yang scale," which does not include semitones, but there are many problems with the Yang scale.

日本の音階の一種。最も基本的な形はミ，ファ，ラ，シ，ド，ミというもので，短2度音程が2ヵ所含まれているのが特色。ただし，陰音階による曲でも上行の旋律では，ミ，ファ，ラ，シ，レ，ミという形に基づくことが多い。都節 (みやこぶし) 音階ともいい，この音階に基づく旋法を陰旋法ともいう。近世邦楽の音階は，これを基本とする。なおこれは，半音を含まない「陽音階」の対概念として提唱されたものであるが，陽音階については問題が多い。
