Grundthema

…The term was coined by Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (1809-88) in 1871, and was first discussed in relation to Wagner's music dramas in Hans von Wolzogen's (1848-1938) treatise on the Ring of the Nibelung (1876). Wagner himself rejected the term leitmotif (he used the terms Grundthema, Ahnungsmotiv, etc.), but the technique was used very effectively as a means of dramatic and psychological development of the story. This is a further development of Berlioz's idée fixe, but a similar technique, albeit in a simpler form, was already recognized in early operas, so it is not necessarily Wagner's original invention. …
