Respiratory function is sufficient if it is able to keep arterial blood composition, including pH, within the normal range. However, the lungs have a large functional reserve capacity in preparation for exercise, so unless measurements are performed under stress conditions such as maximum inhalation and exhalation or exercise, they are often not useful for diagnosing diseases of the lungs, heart, nervous system, and muscles. Respiratory function tests include a wide variety of tests, including fractional lung volume measurements, spirograms, intrapulmonary inhalation distribution tests, ventilation dynamics tests, pulmonary diffusion tests, pulmonary blood flow scans, alveolar-arterial oxygen partial pressure gradient tests, exercise stress tests, and P _0.1 measurements (measurement of intraoral pressure between inhalation and exhalation) for the purpose of evaluating respiratory stimulation.

呼吸機能は，最終的にはpH値を含む動脈血組成値が正常範囲に保たれるように働いていれば十分なわけである。しかし，肺は運動時に備えて，機能的に大きな予備能力をもっているので，最大吸息･呼息とか，運動とかの負荷的条件で測定を行わないと，肺，心臓，神経系，筋肉などの病気の診断には役に立たないことが多い。呼吸機能検査の内容は，肺気量分画測定，スパイログラム(スピログラム)spirogram，肺内吸気分布検査，換気力学検査，肺拡散検査，肺血流スキャン，肺胞気･動脈血酸素分圧較差検査，運動負荷試験，呼吸刺激評価目的のP_0.1測定(呼息と吸息の間の口腔内の圧力の測定)など，きわめて多種多様である。
