Olinda (English spelling)

A city in the eastern part of the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. It is a suburban city located on a low hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, north of the state capital Recife, and is part of the Recife metropolitan area. Founded by the Portuguese in 1537, Olinda prospered as the center of the sugar cane plantation area that developed with the introduction of black slaves. During the occupation by the Dutch from 1630 to 1654, Recife to the south, which had previously only been used as a sugar shipping port, rose to prosperity and became the center of the region, while Olinda declined. The old town, which preserves many ancient buildings such as cathedrals and monasteries from the 16th and 17th centuries, was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site in 1982. In recent years, Olinda has been developing into an upscale residential area in Recife as a result of the rapid urbanization of the city. Population: 389,244 (estimated 1990).

ブラジル北東部，ペルナンブコ州東部の都市。州都レシフェの北方，大西洋を見おろす低い丘の上にある近郊都市で，レシフェ大都市圏の一部をなす。 1537年ポルトガル人によって建設され，黒人奴隷の導入により発展したサトウキビのプランテーション地帯の中心地として繁栄。 1630～54年オランダ人に占領されていた間に，それまで砂糖積出港として利用されていたにすぎない南のレシフェが興隆，この地方の中心地となるとともに，オリンダは衰退。 16～17世紀の聖堂や修道院などの古い建築物が多数保存されている旧市街は，1982年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録。近年レシフェの急速な都市化に伴い，その高級住宅地区としても発展しつつある。人口 38万 9244 (1990推計) 。
