…In 1464 (Kansho 5), he was living at Unkoku-an in Yamaguchi and was already renowned as a painter-monk. Both the name of his hermitage, Unkoku, and the alternate name, Kai-an, were in line with the Song-style learning tastes of the Zen temples at the time, and were taken from the words of Shu Xi. The name Sesshu was also a Buddhist name he gave himself around this time, and he sought the purity of snow and the freedom of a boat, while also combining the image of ink-wash landscape painting, with the intention of starting out in earnest as a painter. …
