A general term for poisonous lizards belonging to the Helodermatidae family. Of the approximately 3,000 species of lizards, only the following two species are poisonous. The Gila monster ( Heloderma suspectum ) (illustration) is found in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico and is about 60 cm long. Its tail is shorter and thicker than its head and body, but its thickness varies depending on its nutritional state. Its limbs are well developed and each finger is roughly the same length.
