The pro-German faction won the state elections on December 18, and the Saarland was annexed to West Germany on January 1, 1957, as a result of the Saarvertrag, a Saarland contract between West Germany and France on October 27, 1956, and remains so to this day.

Coal mining was particularly important, and the iron and steel industries, which used this coal and the minette ore of Lorraine as raw materials, were concentrated in Völklingen, Saarbrücken, and Neunkirchen, and sold their products throughout Germany and to France.
